Faith Hope Charity is one of my favorite images in tattooing. Tizi and I were married on the 1st of August which is the feast day of the saints Pistis, Elpis and Agape (Latin: Fides, Spes et Caritas). Also referred to as the Three Sisters, they were the daughters of St. Sofia and were martyred in the reign of Hadrian. In Albert Perry’s book Tattoo, Secrets of a Strange Art, he talks about how some middle-class Americans to “express their social mindedness” tattooed emblems of their fraternal orders such as the Masons, Shriners, and Odd Fellows, while the lower classes often tattooed a cross, an anchor and a heart symbolizing Faith, Hope and Charity.
Faith Hope Charity are the three most important Christian Virtues. Jesus says in Corinthians 13.13 : Nunc autem manet fides spec caritas trio haec major autem his set caritas.
And now there remain faith, hope, and charity, these three: but the greatest of these is charity.
